I was planning to buy Corsair vengeance 8gb 2133mhz ram but then realised that was probably overkill so decided to buy 1866mhz instead. However the Pentium G3258 only officially supports 1333mhz, is there any point in buying the 1866 mhz ram or is there a way to make the processor support the ram?

The cpu supports 1333 best. Its a 1:1 working ratio. While you can use upto the mobo's max, what this does is over work the cpu, creating more heat as the cpu is forced to work faster and harder than it likes too. The stock cooler is designed to handle stock speeds with stock voltages and stock ram, change any of those and you'll need an upgraded cooling solution. All intel cpus are intel certified for 1333 or 1600, which is why 1600 is the go-to memory of choice for most. It maintains the 1:1 ratio. At 2133, you are looking at close to a 2:1 ratio, so your 54w cpu will need a cooler capable of at least over 100w or you will end up with serious heat issues.

Best to stick with 1333 with the lowest CAS you can find @1.5v

So are you saying that the potential ram speed is relative to the speed of the cpu?

yes and trust me you will not see any noticeable difference between the mhz of ram ......

OK. Can anyone recommend me a good pair of 1333mhz ram with decent timings from a reputable brand.

Would 1600 mhz ram with CL9 be ok and it can just downclock?

The 3258 will run 1600mhz ram at 1600mhz fine despite what intel says. Overclocking the 3258...which is the point will put much mores stress on the cpu than ram at higher mhz. Even then you might lose 1 fps...which si nothing so honestly it dont matter. Get a low cas ram.

Just curious. What happens to the timings on 1600mhz ram when it is downclocked to 1333mhz. Does it just stay the same or do they change too?

They'll drop to the appropriate timings for the speed.

Very nice ram, decent price, good CAS. They'll do nicely, amd don't look too shabby either. :)

How does this build look?

Also, that motherboard will most likely require a bios update before it can support the pentium g3258. How will I go about doing this without an avaliable compatible processor?

You will need a older lga1150 cpu or to choose a diffrent mobo.

Also that psu is super overkill, get a 450 watt or 550 watt seasonic or xfx unit, much better quality.

Most asus boards do not require an installed cpu to do a bios update. Just dl the update to usb, and there is a green squared port on the rear i/o. Install the usb there and hit the bios button on the board and it will update itself. Then finish the build. Simplified instructions. More details in the mobo manual.

Absolutely NO on that psu. The RM750/850 are garbage. They have bad thermal design, use industries worst capacitors on the secondaries and are generally known to fail if pushed to 100% load.
Antec HCG 520, Seasonic m or s 12ii bronze, XFX 550w, Rosewill Capstone 550 are all quality units and more than capable of powering a 750ti. With the money you didn't spend on that boat anchor RM, invest in an Asus r9 280 or Evga gtx 760, either of which will also be powered by the above named psu's.

Thank you all for your input. I think I finally have a build I am happy with. In the end I chose to go with XFX XTR 650 80+ Gold and used the tener to upgrade to the FTW version of the gtx 750 ti.

I was going to choose the 550w but it turns out (somehow) that I can get the 650w cheaper so I have plenty of room to upgrade.

For the same price you can get a r9 270 which is a much faster card.

Thanks, that card is definitely better. I'll go with that.

Yes it would and if the motherboard or CPU doesn't support the RAM it will automatically downclock it.
