Board z97 Msi gaming 7
Ram crucial ballistix sport

Motherboard specs asks for ram to be placed into slots 1 and 3 for dual channel
But if a stick is placed in 1 then I get 10 15 55 code and won't boot
Board and fans power up but no signal on screen

Did I get a faulty board or the wrong ram? Any help appreciated

If you've tried both sticks in A1 without success, and they work in the other slots, i.e. A2/B2 (or slots 2 & 4), then it's likely that you have a faulty DIMM slot and should RMA the board if possible. I would also try slot 1 with just a single stick installed.

Have you tried in 2-4, the mobo may be looking to 2-4 as primary - think I'd RMA regardless, if MSI says 1-3 then this may just be another of the QC issues (big reason I won't build on them, QC stinks)
