hi!!!!
ok guys i have my good oldy phenom 955 oc 3.84GHz @ 240bus with asus m5a880-M 880G chipset MOBO 4GB 1600 dualchannel (maybe upgrade soon for 8). Performs very good with a sapphire's r9 970x. theres no game that cant run extremely good maxed out. but some times there are FPS drops and thing like that a lot of times in demmanding games, also i dont know how much power it consumes.
The max temp in cores till now is like 63-64C with prime 95 but CPU has a temp of 61... while in gaming is like 62C on cores which i think its ok. but i dont know how much it will last (used for hardcore gaming since late 2011).
for this, i use a hyper 212+ with arctic silver.
Ok so before anithing i could sell my phenom for some 90 - 70USD (maybe) and also my MOBO witch its ok for piledriver FX CPU so i have two alternatives:
upgrade with just FX 8320 witch i could OC @ 4GHz maybe more
or
go with a mid range motherboard + intel pentium haswell maybe the 20th year edition an maybe go with a used i5 in the future
So, for games, i dont know if with intel pentium i could get more stable FPS or if the FX would be better.
i know that FX will overkill on multitasking and render but for other tasks my phenom still perform great so even with the pentium i will see a better overall experience with an ultra low TPD, i think or at last very similar. Or i can hold the phenom some more time and see if a lot of newer games will be well optimiced for piledriver?? Or the performace wont worth any of this choices??
i play more multiconsole games than only PC games. i also use autocad and creo parametric and similar apps, but for this my phenom stills great an also i do the regular stuff...
so... what do you think??
also i`m form Mexico city the poblem here is that there arent pentiums 20th edition right now the only one at acceptable prices is the G3220

Don't upgrade, you won't see much difference.yeah i think the same but i can save some money selling my phenom II before it worths nothing, i dont know if for games i would get a more stable FPS rate with FX... also less energy
I wouldn't upgrade until you can get at least an i3 and a decent H97/Z97 MB for upgrade to a i5 next year.

and I doubt the Phenom is going to lose too much value, after all, it can outperform AMDs latest offerings

well for me an i3 is a waste of money for gaming... how much pefomane vs a pentium??? is the same chip whit no HT... also it perform as good as an i5 "for gaming" in like 80 to 95% of all games...
this is just an example... i found another one with newer games... the same resouts so pay the double for an i3 for the same performace is not a good idea... overclock may work only to avoid a bottleneck but for a r9 270x will be pointless and even most demmanding games will perform similar maybe 10 FPS less at much, i think again....
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/07/05/how-ma...
i think of the intel pentium as a core i7 with no HT, with 2 cores and downclock to 3.0GHz prfect for gaming.... in my opinion

The M5A88-V EVO was OK. But not yours. It only has 4+1 power phases and a not heatsinked VRM.well i know that. but even so i think its harder to overclock a phenom II than a FX CPU speaking only in therms of power, also i dont expect to rise a 8320 to 5GHz even if im lucky with a binned chip or so.... the mosfets its not a big deal i can buy a heatsink any time and maybe i will soon
also im not talking abot brute performance only in gamming... myphenom II in theory should gives me like the 90% of FPS rate.. i just want more stability and maybe even a haswell's pentium can be better at that

well my friend alpha3031 even the other 20 to 5% of the games that will really be impacted, the pentium has the power to bottleneck @ 60 FPS which is my target and the overclock its so cool, better wait for the G3258... and also wait for the chipset that'll be capable to OC the non K cpus...even by that time a new petiun with 1600 RAM suport could appear...
do you know anything of those chipsets??i've heard something but no remember...

Best solution
Yes, it's more of a "sidegrade"
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-cpu-review-overclo...
One of these comes out every month. Don't upgrade until you can afford something from three tiers above (there are two tiers in between) your current Phenom II X4 955 BE currently in tier 4 (so somthing from tier 1 would be a good upgrade)

well, do you think my mother board really kill the performance of the FX8320?? i say, yeah is like an update more than an upgrade but thats the point also i'll upgrade my RAM to 8GB 1866MHz at last so only the piledriver will support it at 100%
also remember that in mexico pc's are way more expensives i'm lucky cose i can buy from the distribuors, from this point of view my phenom stills has a good price as a used item. so go with the FX is the easiest way...
well i'm also thinking that a haswell motherboard is more reliable and more "future proof" cose the 5th generation will be compatible, as far as i know.
but well lets stop tinking in the future, so, right now the pentium G3258 will provide me more stable frame rates than the FX 8320 with some non hardcore OC?

well remmber that my OC puts my phenom higher than the 980 which is tier II... i dont belive it maybe i'll try to find some 2500K with a good MOBO out there
thanks to all maybe update to FX cose the new intructions less TPD and more multitasking and try to get some heatsink for the mosfets
