I'm not sure if my ISP is causing the issue or my TD-W8970 modem.

I generally have my internet drop out, perhaps twice to three times daily. This can become very annoying during online gaming. This however has progressed to hourly drop outs which can last up to 5-10 minutes on average.

When I run a diagnostics test I get DNS Root Fail + Ping Primary Domain Name Server Fail

Any ideas?

Solution
Losing the DNS is very different than the complete connection going down. If your games crash after they are active it likely is more than a simple DNS failure. DNS lookup is generally only done at the very beginning of a session. Things like games keep session open for long times so they are less affected by DNS failure. I bet your whole connection is failing not just the DNS

In any case the simple solution is to not use the DNS from the ISP. I would use 8.8.8.8 as the primary and 4.2.2.2 as secondary. These are google and level3. Because of how these are done it is highly unlikely even one of these would fail if you lose both then your problem is that you connection to the internet is completely going down and you need to...

My whole connection does drop out as I mentioned, these however were the only errors I could find myself. I checked my DNS server, both of them are just 0.0.0.0 so that might be the issue. I'll add the ones you mentioned and I'll get back to you if I experienced the same issue and I'll contact my ISP since they are known for being quite poor quality...

If I have no issues I'll be sure to select best solution, thanks.

Hey Bill, so it seemed to work for most the day however during a zombie game I ended up dropping out, I was just thankful it wasn't a poker game. I also extended the lease time, do you think I can do anything else before calling my ISP?

You would want to verify it is not your equipment since they ALWAYS will blame that when you call. With ADSL you could try a different cable where the internet comes in just so you can say you already tried that.

The other common thing to do is to open CMD windows and ping your local router address and something like 8.8.8.8. If you lose the internet connection but you can still access your router itself is not the cause of the problem.

Yeah they'll always try blame the customer after reading their laminated step by step sheet asking me if I power cycled the modem.. I've always had problems with the company (DODO) and I've had 3 different modems in the past 4 years. I pinged and didn't have any packets lost with an average of 124ms. I'm guessing the only thing left to do now is contact them? Perhaps even consider a new ISP.

The key is to leave it run all the time until you do detect a failure in your game. When you can prove that your PC can ping your router but at the same time can not ping the internet it proves your PC is fine and your router is fine. If all the pings are fine but just the game drops then it get very complex since it means it is not a real simple network failure.

Of course if both ping fail at the same time you are being dropped from a game then you have to suspect it really could be your PC or your router.

I suspect what you will see is the ping to the internet will fail at the same time the game disconnects but your ping to your router is running fine. That the ISP should be able to fix.....well maybe if you get lucky and get a tech with a brain.

Hey Bill, I got a tech so stupid that he literally hung up on me although I was being very polite and simply explaining the issue, I called back an spoke with a level 2 tech which advised me the previous tech didn't even log my call.. Some service huh?

My overall internet does drop but the helpful level 2 tech reckons they're simply having trouble and I shouldn't be alarmed if it does drop out up to twice in a 24 hour period, I guess it's what I get for having a cheap ISP.

Either way I had a 17 hour streak without drop outs until about an hour ago, I guess I'll just have to deal with it until I change ISPs. Thanks for the help, much appreciated
