Hi, every time I try to copy and backup files from a GPT partition to a standard partition it says its copying and the folders copy but after completion the files are not there, why does it do this...?

I have lost lots of pictures and documents thinking its been backed up

My procedure is:
I remove the hard drive and place in different computer to access the drive
I drag and drop the profile containing pics, docs, music folders to a backup folder on same computer or my network NAS

Thanks for any help

Your problem has nothing to do with GPT, I'm sure of it.
GPT is simply the way the partitions are referenced on the disk.
If you can see the files, it is doing its job.

You've mentioned "profile" in both these posts. I guess you mean copying C:\users\username.
I wouldn't try pasting this whole folder back in to a new operating system, just grab the locations where user files are stored from the backup and leave any system files behind.
I doubt this has anything to do with the fact it is a GPT disk. If the machine you were using couldn't read it then you wouldn't see the folders.
Check that you can actually browse and open the files on this drive when it is in the "different computer".
You are not using bitlocker for file encryption are you?

After that, check your destination drive. Can you browse and open files on this?
Have you tried running a check disk on this drive?

Thanks for your reply Vincent, the original computer can read the drive, I just want to back up the profile before I reset the computer back to factory, I have done this twice now on two different jobs with GPT partitions and on both occasions copying them I've discovered its only copied the folder and not the files even though when copying it says its coping all the files, luckily I always make a backup of the partition using either Ghost 11.5 or Reflect as a safety precaution, I'm dealing with customers data and the last thing I want to do is to loose their data

The first time I encountered a GPT setup the customer had around 200GB of data to back up, when coping from Sata to Sata after it said it had finished coping all the data some time later, I re-installed Windows, then went to transfer data back and discovered it was only the folders and not the files within the folders, I had to either re-store the Ghost backed up image (or explore the Ghost image to retrieve the files cant remember which way) and transfer the files through the network to the drive, that was the only way the data could get copied.

Now its happened again with this job, I've had to mount the backed up image of the partition that I made from the program Reflect to retrieve the profile containing pics and docs ect...and transfer via network to the freshly installed Windows 8
I have used two different back up disks and have run a bad block test with no errors so I believe my backup disks are good, the problem appears to be transferring from Sata to Sata with one disk setup as GPT and one disk setup as MBR

It's very worrying with big heart palpitations when I discover my customers data is not there when it comes to transferring back after a fresh Windows installation
