My wife's Dell laptop with Windows Vista is slow and when it comes up, it is always in an upgrade status saying not to turn off computer. It continues in this state, but the upgrade status percentage stays at zero. Also a symbol comes up by the on button with a nine(9) in a lock. Any advice will be appreciated.

I don't want to be rude, but Windows Vista is considered as the worst operating system of all time. Switching to either Windows 7 or 8.1 (for about 70$) might be a good idea.

If you can pull the drive you can get the data off. From what I know they mean it. Don't power off the laptop while it's updating. If you've done that already then the OS might be shot. You can try to re image it if you can. Or repair the install. There are repair methods you can do that won't cause you to lose any data.
