Hey guys, i need help in upgrading my system.I assembled this system back in 2007.Recently my PSU blew up lol and i have had display issues so need to upgrade asap. Here's the specs : 1) Motherboard : Intel DG 33
2) Processor : Core 2 Quad Q6600
3) Ram : 2Gb DDR2 (It won't support DDR 3 )
4) Graphics card : Nvdia 8800 GT Alpha Dog Edition.
5) PSU : 450 W (Point of View-EU)
6) CASE : Point of View Turbine 2 with included 25 cm side fan but no front and rear fans.(It can be fitted though).
Now what i want to upgrade is the RAM,PSU and Graphics card. So with regards to the graphics card what would be the ideal highest quality up-gradable choice on my config.I would prefer Nvdia. And also PSU thinking of corsair but what about watts.Should i buy keeping in mind a future upgrade or current system requires abt 350 W so should i just get a 500 W PSU.

Solution
In order to upgrade to DDR3 you will need a new Motherboard+CPU+Ram. Your video card is really old now so that will need replacing soon as well. Then you obviously will need a new PSU. I would look at a 550w XFX unit for great quality since they are made by Seasonic.

I would go for the new CPU, Motherboard, PSU and ram first. Worry about the video card later when you have more money.

I agree with you totally but what if i don't wanna upgrade the motherboard and CPU.Am ok with DDR2 for now i'll upgrade it later.I want to get the best bang for the buck on the current config by upgrading specifically these three components PSU,Ram and Graphics.Else is it wise to just not upgrade it that way since it won't allow me to further add components in the future?

I would say 1000 USD. I am running win 7 ultimate currently. I am looking forward to just upgrading these components for now if i get them to run with the current config i.e the RAM,PSU and Graphics. If not i'll upgrade the whole system. Will the 660 ti or 670 gtx be compatible with my mobo?

The Q6600 is actually not too bad as a processor, I was running one until recently and it was absolutely fine for normal day to day pc usage and some gaming on BF3, Sins of a solar empire: rebellion and Rome 2.

The best upgrade path for you depends on what you plan on doing with this system in the future? Will you continue upgrading to a more modern OS, Mobo, RAM and CPU in the near future? or Do you want this rig fixed up enough to last you nutil you can buy a whole new system? If you are planning on upgrading a bit at a time, then I would start with RAM.

Depending on how many free RAM slots your motherboard has, you can upgrade to 4GB RAM (32bit OS won't support more and I don't believe your Mobo supports 64bit OS). You can pick up DDR2 RAM dirt cheap on Ebay, either buy a further 2GB and hope it's compatible or to be on the safe side buy a 4GB kit.

The best GPU and PSU is dependant as i said previously on what you plan on doing. A low end GPU i.e a GTX 750, or an older model such as a 650ti would match your processor fine, and a 350/400W PSU would be plenty. However, if you are gonig to upgrade the rest of the system soon then you may as well buy a 500/600W PSU, which tend to be only marginally more expensive than 400W models. As for GPU, Buy something decent such as a GTX 760 so that when you upgrade the rest of the system it will not bottleneck.

Hope this helps.

Hi! Hey my Mobo supports 64 bit and it has ram support upto 8gb. Well i would eventually change and upgrade the complete system to a more modern one in about 1.5 years.I need to run this one upto that time period. So am not looking forward to high end upgrade because the mobo is gonna eventually run out of life lol. But i wanna know what is the ideal graphics card that i could upgrade to at present for gaming as well as media production.I would upgrade the ram to 4 or 6 gb. The PSU i'll upgrade to 500 W.

Hello... I ran Q9550's and 8 gig of DDR2 and GTX460's in my P35 win7 64 machines... I got more $$ for my DDR2 than newer larger DDR3 on EBAY.
But basically that is the fastest option for you... Your MB can only handle 2gb sticks max per slot, and I feel 8gb ram is required for current Windows OS, for smooth fast performance.

Check the Compatibility area for your MB upgrade options, and search EBAY for possible low cost parts.

Sorry, my mistake about the motherboard, you could still pick up RAM cheap second hand though :)

If you're not looknig to upgrade further for 1.5 years, I'd say go for a lower end video card. The ideal card for the Q6600, with no bottlenecks will depend on what you're doing, eg. how CPU intensive a game is. I'd say you can't go wrong with something like a 750/750ti or even a 650ti/ 650ti boost which you could pick up cheap second hand.

That's good just that my case might not have space to attach two cards or in SLi. So i need to get one good all rounder lol. I'll look into 750 gtx. I'll be able to carry it forward into a new build right? when am done with my current system. The 750 should run on 500 W psu or will it require more juice?

Hello... Yes... your PCIe slot will run modern cards BUT there are always exceptions... so buy one locally for a return policy if it doesn't.
the other problem is Windows likes to reserve RAM with with the size of The Video Card ram, about 2gb. So you back to Upgrading your DDR2 too, and they are selling that stuff at premium prices yet for matched sets of DDR2-800.

Hello... Here is a Dell I upgraded someone with... you would just need a Video card with it... Dell Inspiron i3847-4617BK Desktop.
I don't mean to offend anyone with this Suggestion but... this customer needed the whole works, OS DDR3 MB and CPU.... this was a time saver for me and Him.
The point being is that starting new with an i3, i5, i7's is that they are all compatable in the same MB allowing us builders and customers a huge upgrade performance.
Also DDR3 comes available in a single 8gb stick per slot... that 32 gb's of total compacity for the future at a reasonable price.
