Hello,

I want to upgrade my lenovo y510p with some ram from Gateway nv7802U. Would it be possible? Here are the specs:

Lenovo y510p: i7-4700MQ CPU @2.4GHz, GT 755M; 8GB RAM, DDR3 - 1600MHz;
Gateway NV7802U: Dual Core 2.2GHz, T6600; 4GB RAM, DDR3 - (1066 - presumably MHz).

Alternatively, could I take the CPU from Gateway and add it to Lenovo?

Thanks very much!

As I mentioned earlier the 8GB of memory is likely DDR3L your older memory is probably not. The voltages won't match so you won't be able to run both at once unless you do some serious underclocking, assuming it works at all.

The memory in your Lenovo likely uses all the memory slots available, so if you want to upgrade, memory will have to be removed.

The processor in your Gateway is incompatible with the Lenovo, so you couldn't install it. The Lenovo has a better processor anyways.

I'm not even sure why you would want to do either of those things. 8GB of memory is more then enough for a laptop, and you have the third fastest laptop processor from Haswell (Excluding the refresh chips, which are all 100Mhz faster)

The CPUs are absolutely not compatible.

Anything with a Haswell chip is going to be running DDR3L. The older machine is probably running standard SODIMM DDR3 which means the voltages won't match.

Thanks for your inputs!
I don't want to downgrade. The old laptop (gateway NV7802U) is on the shelve and I thought that I might be able to use RAM and CPU to add to Lenovo y510p. I was thinking to do some complex simulation/rendering which would require loads of RAM.

The idea was to use (if I can) what I already have! :)

Good idea in theory, but laptops are just not as upgradeable as desktops. With a desktop, you might have been able to just add the memory. The processor was a no-go either way. The Gateway's processor is likely 5-6 years out of date, and processor sockets have changed a lot over the years.

Guys, I checked the Y510p: there are 2 slots, one used (8GB). Physically, the 2GB memory from gateway nv7802u is compatible. I did not turn the laptop on with this memory (2GB). Is there anything else that needs to be considered? Does this mean that the memory could be used?

Thanks a lot!
