So I built a system and everything turned on, now what?

Hi everyone,

I've been digging around online and there are so many different answers that I hope someone here can help me. Which order do I need to install everything on the PC? I've heard a lot of different answers to this but my best guess would be motherboard BIOS > BIOS settings > drivers from mobo website (chipset, then lan/wireless, then the rest) > then windows updates > then drivers from anything extra that I've added to the PC like a mic/keyboard/mouse > then the programs I use.

The way I did it was I flashed the BIOS because of an issue the original firmware had with a windows chipset update, and then I went into the UEFI and changed some settings. I installed the OS and then I started doing windows updates but realized I probably shouldn't so I only did the first batch and I still have a lot more to do after installing those. Now I'm wondering if it would be best for me to carry on with all the windows specific updates and keep avoiding the ASUS and Nvidia ones until the end, or if I should carry on but do it in the order I mentioned above and just finish the windows updates once I get to that step. This is the first PC I've ever built so I would really appreciate the help. Also if this is the wrong forum I'm sorry, I didn't know where the best place to put this would be.

Solution
Update the bios, which you already did should be first.

2nd, install all the drivers then install windows updates.

It really doesn't matter if you do updates first and then drivers or vise versa, just as long as you have both that is all you need.

Okay thanks everyone! Just one more question, is it best to get the drivers for the hardware from the manufacturers website or will getting any of it through Windows update be okay too? I know the GPU drivers should come straight from Nvidia but I don't know if that applies to all hardware.

Don't use any hardware drivers from windows update, I've had a lot of issues with windows' choice on drivers. Just get all the drivers from the manufacturer except for the graphics drivers (like you said).

Nvidia is a hardware manufacturer too, did you mean to say get the drivers from the 3rd party manufacturers like Asus and EVGA? I also have another question I just thought of, do I need to keep the downloaded files after I install the update or can I delete them? I don't want a bunch of clutter from the zipped and unzipped driver files.

No sorry, I meant NVidia (specifically GeForce.com) drivers.

Yes once you install the drivers you can delete those.
