PC flatlines on FFT/FPU

Hi guys I want to overclock my CPU but I personally beleive that I have a bummed out PSU but wanted someones best guess to see if PSU is the issue and not another software/hardware issue.

So Stock settings are enabled in bios (XMP is the profile on Bios)

I run AIDA64 on CPU only - Fine 60c tops (17c ambient)

I run FPU - instant shutdown, no BSOD (even with auto restart ticked OFF) and instantly reboots with 1 beep) I get no chance to view temps etc as it is as soon as hit start

Blend test on P95 - max 63c same ambient, have not tested for hours and hours, but hour and a half.

FTT - maybe 1 second then it shuts down in the same manner as FPU on AIDA64

When I look inside my tower I see the mobo is still lit when I get the 'insta shutdown' the fans are slowing down (indicating loss of use/power) and then they spin back up when my system posts with 1 beep.

The PSU I have is the GS700 and I think it might be faulty as the LED on it changes colour at random, so chances are, something else is wrong with it, I never get sudden black screens unless I run these FFT/FPU tests.

My 5 way optimizer put my OC to 4.6 but again, if I run a test, it just black screens and restarts with 1 beep, so what gives?

Do you mean an AIDA64 CPU/GPU/Memory test without the FPU? I will do this now and see.

Status Update, I am running AIDA64 with the GPU/CPU/System memory, it's a bit laggy on the mouse cursor and typing on here but I imagine this is because everything is at 100% correct? no shutdown so far will keep running for an hour.

Yes I am back at stock settings for everything currently (4.0ghz on my 4790k)

SproutyPC,

The Colonel may be onto something viable such as a weak PSU rail unable to deliver the Amps and Watts needed to support a heavy software load, but I'd like to offer an alternative troubleshooting path which is based on very similar symptoms.

The current version of Prime95 (v28.5) FFT's runs AVX and FMA instructions on the FPU of your processor, as does AIDA64's FPU test. Your processor might be crashing because BIOS requires significantly higher Vcore (resulting in much higher CPU temperatures) to support AVX/FMA code, which is designed for high-level number crunching apps and A/V content creation apps that you may never use.

Try running Small FFT's using Prime95 v26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot.com/2011/04/prime95-266.html

This just might identify the problem simply as insufficient Vcore, rather than an insufficient PSU. It's worth a try, and if it works, then it's a $0 fix, which is always better for beer $.

I put my fan speed to the max and left it for 5 minutes to ensure my CPU was at it's coolest (35c ambient is 17), I managed to get 3 minutes before I panicked cos the temp was slowly growing up to 76c package temp, I think my PSU might be ok as I had sufficient time to look over the voltages on HWmonitor and they read:
12v = 12.192
5v = 5.040
3.3 = 3.328
VIN3 = 0.856
VIN4 - 1.296
Vcore = 1.776 (this is on the mobo section, should this be 1.200ish to match the CPU Voltage?)

VID was 1.278
IA 1.280
GT offset was 0.000

I am willing to bet my Hyper 212 needs taking off and the MX-4 needs reapplying and the backplate needs tightening perhaps. I think 35 on max fan speed (1400 x2) is ludicrously high on idle for the late evening.

Should add - no shutdown when I ran the Small FTTs, but of course i panicked lol
