I can get very cheaply a new unboxed 550ti or a refurbished 480 from a friend of my for around $50. I know it's really cheap so it might just be worth it to toss the money and give it a shot, but with which?

Would either be an improvement over my gtx 295? Aside from maybe how power hungry it is

thanks!

480 is a lot stronger than 550ti

Your current GPU is itself very powerful compared to the choices you kept. Simply put, The 480 is much, much more powerful than 550 Ti and it'll be awesome to get it!

Performance increase would be minimal as both your current and the 480 are powerful but old so you can say 3-8 FPS increase in gaming, marginal I'd say.

Neither would be worth it.
A GTX480 is comparable to your GTX295.
The only benefit would be elimination of any dual gpu issues.
The 550ti somewhat less.

Thanks! I don't think I'd see a noticeable difference in fps in the games I play anyway. I can already play skyrim at high-ultra settings with 50-60fps. And that's really the only graphically intensive game I play. Next closest being swtor and hawken, which just aren't

I have a gtx 295, and personally I wouldn't do any upgrading unless you were looking to really future proof. It still manages to play most games on high settings with great frames, so long as they're not dx11 exclusive
