Greetings again! We just had a thunderstorm move through, and before I could get to my pc to turn it off, there was a loud crack of thunder as well as lightening I suppose and then I heard a quick pop. My monitor went blank but the pc remained on. I thought it (the monitor) was fried, but I turned it and the pc off then back on, and both appeared to be fine.

However... my on-board network adapter gives me "this device cannot start (code 10)" error in Windows Device Manager. I tried to update the driver but Windows says it has the latest already. I then uninstalled it and let it search for new hardware to find the adapter and let it re-install drivers. It just sat there for several minutes and found nothing. I finally shut down, and restarted Windows and it found the adapter but said device driver sortware was not successfully installed.

Wondering if my on-board network adapter is shot? Any other ideas on what i can try? Thanks to anyone who might be able to shed some light on this for me. :)

Solution
Check if device manager can still detect the network adapter..

If so, use the Mobo driver disk to re install the thing..

If not, thats probably dead
You might try clearing your CMOS and checking that the adapter is enabled in your Device Manager. If it's not, try enabling it. If it is enabled, try disabling it, restart, then re-enabling it.

I think you might be right that it's fried, but it's worth checking.

Thanks for the tips! I'll give them a go and post an update! :)

Update - it did in fact fry my network adapter on the mobo. I bought one online for $14 and it works like a charm. Just have to give up a PCI slot, which is no big. Thanks for the help everyone! :D

Disabling the virtualization in bios menu did the trick!!

I had an issue where after installing virtualbox i had my host connection disabled in device manager. It stated that my gigabit 82579DC had the latest driver installed but somehow had this yellow exclamation mark. I did everything from restore to clean win install to formating the whole drive.. Did a lot of research about the problem with no particular solution -heck i even flashed the bios. Anyways just before going to buy another i decided to take a look inside the bios where i came across this virtualization tech (enabled) i knew it had something to do with virtual machines so decided to disable it and voila!

Im writing this because a lot of people out there are still hanging with this issue with no real solutions. So maybe this will help some people.
Plus i dont know about what may be causing this interference between this and the network card- maybe someone can elaborate more on this
