fps problems on free roaming games

my fps drops whenever i play on free roam games but when i play like a game where the map is really small the fps is so smooth, what could be the problem? what should i change or upgrade?

ive seen gameplays on youtube with the same gpu and they dont lag like my pc does. :(


i3 530 2.94ghz
Radeon HD 6870
4GB DDR3 RAM
120GB HDD
600W PSU

VRAM, hard drive read times for loading the next area, bandwidth for pulling data for the next area from the game server, total system ram.

Any or all of the above. I recently upgraded to a ssd, and notice massively faster load times and transitions in LOTRO. ( open world mmo)
And some games simply take a while regardless of your system. Have you asked on the forums for the game in question?
Which game is it?

Also gameplay replays are often recordings rather than live streams. A replay would not really show an accurate picture of what the player experienced. Even on the fastest computers, zone transitions can have a "stutter" to them that has nothing to do with the pc playing them.
