My laptop is a toshiba satellite. I am unable to boot my computer, as it just keeps repeating 'reboot and select proper boot device. I have tried changing the HDD priority in the BIOS but it didn't fix the problem.
Any ideas?

There should be an option to select defaults in the bios.

Try checking if you hard drive was accidentally formatted by pressing the "O" or "0" keys, its either letter O or zero, i cant remember now as i did this on a friends laptop. This procedure will allow you to enter to recovery mode where you can repair mother boot record or whatever corruption has occurred on the laptop hard drive.

If you do recover from this error without the need of reinstalling windows make you back up data to an external hard drive and also manually create a restore point in windows then update all drivers and bios also. Only use toshiba website for drivers etc.

I have already reformatted the hard drive. I am attempting to re-install a new copy of XP, however I am getting the "reboot and select proper device". The boot order has been changed to the cdoctor drive, multiple XP copies have been tried. Sata cable has been switched to different ports and still nothing. Both XP discs are read in another computer. Still nothing!

On my pc pressing F10 allows for quick selection of boot device. However in some motherboards you need to add the detected hard drives to the boot priority and setting to 1st on the list to install windows and normal booting up if the drive you installed windows is not set to first boot device.

I have a blank hard drive. I reformatted it and attempted to install a fresh version of windows. I have my boot priority as CD/DVD to boot from the windows disc, however I get an error (reboot and select proper......) If I set the boot priority to the hard drive first, I get Bootmgr is missing.

Try taking out the cmos battery for 10 minutes this may hopefully set it back to factory defaults. The other option is using cmos jumper to force it to defaults, also updating your bios can rectify the issue provided your cd drive is in proper working condition. If the cd drive is faulty try making a usb bootable xp install and install via usb.

Gotcha. I have hit the cmos reset button on the back, still having the same results. I also restored bios defaults through bios, same results. I do not believe my cd drive is faulty because the bios recognizes it as Asus, but it could be faulty. I will remove the CMOS battery and try that.

How do I create a USB Bootable xp? I copy and pasted everything from the cd to a flash drive and still get the same error...

I am unable to boot in windows xp, that is my issue. I can't seem to get my computer to boot off the disc no matter what I do and I know the disc works since it is read in another computer.

Thank you for your time helping me out as well.
