Hi guys, hope you can help me. My desktop turned off at some point Friday night into Saturday morning. I was able to remote to the machine Friday, roommate confirmed that it wasn't functioning on Saturday. I didn't have any power surges that I'm aware of, so it seems something internal failed to cause this. This isn't the first time I've encountered this issue, but I was dragging my feet after I got it stable previously (about 3 weeks ago).

Upon getting power the machine attempts to turn on and fails after at most 1 second with a single short beep. It then waits about 4 seconds and repeats the cycle. I was actually able to let it sit long enough to get a successful POST (ASUS express gate loading indicator displayed on the screen) but since then its been unresponsive.

Once I have the time to sit down and triage the thing, where should I be looking? It would take me a considerable amount of time to get any replacement parts (I've got an old power supply that would take me about a week to get) so I'm limited in what I can do. My first inclination is to look at the possibility that the power supply is dead. We've had power surges in the past (I really need to buy a surge protector) which I believe caused the first issue a few weeks back. Obviously there's always the chance the motherboard is shot instead/as well, but wouldn't getting a successful POST make that less likely?

Any tips or advice are welcome (and replacement parts if you're feeling particularly charitable :p )

Thanks!

See http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm

1 beep is probably a memory error.

Stop it restating all the time by starting in safe mode (F8) then disabling automatic start on failure - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/advanced-sta...

Then use memtest86 to test your ram.
