my current build:
mobo- gigabyte 970a-ds3
cpu- fx-6300
cpu cooler- hyper evo 212
gpu- r9 270x
ram- hyperx fury 8 gb 1866mhz
case-rosewill challenger us
psu- rosewill green 630 watt

any suggestions of what i should upgrade first. also any suggestions on what i should upgrade it to. im perfectly ok with a amd proccesor so that is the last thing on my list to change.

It depends on your budget, but my advice would be an intel processor and a Z97 board.
The AM3+ socket is fairly dead, no real upgrade path, and the jump from a 6300-8320 isnt much in terms of performance.

the 6300 is a perfectly fine processor with no real reason to upgrade it, to me atleast.

Its not that its not a good processor, but its your next upgrade.
Your graphics card really has no need to be replaced, but any card worthwhile to upgrade to will be bottlenecked.

Your other option is a SSD.

Looks pretty good overall, I'd look to the GPU if primarily for gaming, else a SSD for overall performance

Another option would be to crossfire another R9 270x. It would be an upgrade that gives you a tangible benefit. Upgrading to a Z97 is also a great idea. Either one of these would give you something that you could directly feel the impact, performance wise, in your system. But keep in mind you may need to upgrade your PSU to crossfire. Best of luck.

what about crossfire? and if that really is the only upgrade option, what processor/board do you suggest. as for price for the combo something around $250-300.

also would i need to upgrade the psu for crossfire. would you suggest a semi modular one?

The motherboard runs on the 970 chipset, so no Xfire or SLI without being bottlenecked by the x4 slot.

IF you dont have to re buy an OS, an i5 + H97 board would be a step up, but with the 270x you wont notice much. Really the build is balanced well and its tough to point out just one upgrade without it feeling like a waste.

what games and problems are you having? there must be a reason to want to upgrade. if youre just itching to spend more (we all know the feeling( well idk how to justfy that lol

Yes, you would need to upgrade the psu, semi modular or fully modular would be best as two gpus can take up some room.

50 bucks over budget but you get a Z97 board with a K model CPU. Can adjust to fit a strict budget.

Its a tough decision, its a very balanced build.

No need for the K model CPU unless you plan on overclocking. I see you have the hyper 212. I don't know if you OC already but if you plan too, consider a stronger CPU cooler too. Just a thought.

would a water cooler be a good upgrade or is a cpu/mobo more worthwhile

A new motherboard and CPU would give the system a longer life, and better upgrade path, but it costs a decent bit.
A water cooler would allow for a mildly better OC now, which would stretch performance as long as you can, but overall its not as effective price/performance.

A water cooler is great, however in order to justify water cooling, you should overclock for sure. Hopefully going that step will give you the desire to see what your system can really do. Just make sure that if you get a closed loop water cooler, that it is a decent one.

Your best future proof option is to upgrade the motherboard and cpu.

Over locking the 6300 past 4.5 will yeild amazing results if CPU is currently limiting you. It will match an fx 8320 at stock at that point. The Intel jump would only be worth it if you plan on a GPU upgrade soon as well. All in all for gaming the gpu matters a lot more than the CPU and the 6 core is wholly capable
