a few years back (2012) tried to dual boot windows 7 and linux mint with both OS on separate hard drives. i messed up somewhere and was only able to boot into linux mint , so I removed it and got a grub error ( dont remember what that error was ) i fixed my mbr and was able to boot back into windows 7 and it works with no problems.

now , i want to install windows 8.1 but no matter what windows disk i use xp,7,8,8.1 ... i get
"NTLDR is mising , press any key to restart" ...

originally i had windows xp but i formatted my drive and installed 7 via usb (2011) .. but now i cant install any windows OS at all usb or CD. I can install Ubuntu from a usb to a new hard drive tho. i have 4 brand new hard drives (just because) and i cant install windows on either of them.

now, i know it isnt my windows 7 partition thats causing the problem because "ntdlr is missing" shows up with a brand new (unallocated) hard drive , even without a hard drive it shows up when a windows boot disk is present.

i checked my boot order and even reflashed my bios but no luck.
the install disks ,work on my netbook and laptop but not on my desktop... can someone help me figure this out?

the desktop thats having these issues is a dell optiplex gx520 btw.

thanks in advanced

Solution
for anyone else having this problem , i've found a solution.
simply install your windows ISO to a USB using Rufus: http://rufus.akeo.ie/ and it will work as it should.
before this i used win2flash which no longer works on my desktop for some reason.
