Hi ppl,

So i built a PC with an Asrock extreme 6 z97 and im thinking of taking proper precautions for backup, hw redundancy etc etc.

I ALSO have a Network Stora (2x2TB drives, currently in mirrored setup.
Finally I have a media player with 2Tb used HDD in it, not backed up AT all

I use my pc for photo editing, gaming and am thinking of also making it a network share for my media player.
(the stora currently has 2TB movies/tv as a network share).

So my idea as far as i understand (limited raid knowledge):

Chuck about 12 TB into the PC, Keep 4 TB in my NAS. Run the PC in Raid 10 (therefore leaving 6TB useable) and use this for photos, movies, Tv.
The use the NAS as a physical backup, perhaps boosting the HDD's in that to 6TB.

Am I on the right track?
I do know that RAID is not a backup and I'm trying to utilise the PC, the NAS and the media player and keep it running well + keeping it backed up.

:)

Best plan will vary dependent on user, hardware available and situation. As a minimum:

1. Keep a backup on site
2. Keep a backup off site
3. Rotate storage media for offsite backups.

I'm not comfy w/ someone else having access to my data or being responsible for the integrity of my company data. Also prohibited by contract (confidentiality issues)

I have no use for RAID 0 on the desktop, never have and unless you do video editing or something more intensive the CAD and gaming, you won't either. I do find RAID useful as a backup solution with all the variants having their own advnatges, but I have sense sworn off RAID after my last build.

Tried RAID 0 Samsung 256 GB pros in RAID 0 and it was slower than a single drive. Thot I was doing something wrong toll Samsung said "we told ya so". I also has two 2 TB SSHDs in RAID 1 and busted that array also while I was at it as simply put, RAID is effort. I just replaced the NAS with the twin 2TB drives and I just find it much less hassle to simple mirror the two drives using a free backup program. I got tired of buying a spare drive just to keep around for when a HD failed so I could rebuild the array.

I also have a BlacX and series of those spare HDs that I had lying around which I use to make backups and store off site. It runs at the end of the day and completes just before quitting time.
