I did a mild upgrade this past tax season and went from a first generation i7 960 and two Geforce 260s in SLi and 12G of ram to now:

AMD FX(tm)-6300 with 16G of ram and a Radeon R7870 GPU and am noticing that it's really not that much better, if not worse at times, than my older setup for WoW MoP 5.4

Is there something in my parts list that is causing the problem or is this what I should expect from this setup? Here's my DxDiag too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

FX-6300 is not really an upgrade over the i7-920 and the 7870 is also not that much better than GTX 260 SLI. You did more of a sidegrade than an upgrade.

I was afraid of that. At the time the wife wouldn't let me dump much money into my system as the graphics cards were dying and I couldn't find a mobo upgrade for my 920 so I got what I could afford. Seems to play games like BF3 much better though, just not WoW. I thought maybe it had something to do with the drivers, guess I was wrong.

Games like BF3 are optimized for AMD so they will be a bit better. For single-threaded games the i7-920 is better though since the FX series are not as powerful per core (despite having more cores).

An reasonable suggestions you could make to help improve it some or is it kind of a losing battle?

Overclocking the FX-6300 heavily would be the main thing.

Right now I've got it up to 4.5ghz following a guide I found on here. My temps seem to stay below 40c even while playing WoW. Though I've not done a stress test on it. Is it recommended to OC anymore than this?

Not without stress testing. Prime95 seems to work well for that.

The thing is, WoW relies heavily on single core performance and thats way better for Intel. Even an i3 would run the game better than the FX6300.

"Even" an i3? The i3s run most games better than the FX-6300.

More like "even a Pentium G3220 would run WoW better than the FX-6300".

Oops wanted to say, even an older gen. i3!

So I realize that my cpu and gpu aren't that great. Being that they're still fairly new, is there one that you would recommend upgrading that would still have some shelf life to it with upcoming games? Would upgrading my CPU to a higher model AMD be ok, considering I purchased an AMD Mobo or would maybe purchasing another gpu in SLi help?

It would be totally pointless to upgrade to a "better" AMD CPU - All the FX CPUs use the same cores. The FX-9590 is just an overclocked FX-9370, which is just an overclocked FX-8350, which is just an overclocked FX-8320, which is just an FX-6300 with 2 extra useless cores. Performance improvements would be negligible or nonexistent in most games. AMD makes a killing selling hot-running poorly OC'd versions of their weaker CPUs for double or triple the cost.

Your GPU is actually quite good, the problem lays with your CPU entirely.

For the time being, the i3s have a great price/performance ratio and the i3-4150 would still beat your current FX-6300, especially in MMOs. However, the i3s may be of limited use in a couple years if DX12 or Mantle become more common, since they'll benefit less from those new APIs. For some degree of future proofing, I'd recommend an i5-4460 or an i5-4590.

The problem isn't that AMD CPUs run poorly, they just don't run as well as their Intel counterparts in single threaded applications.

...Meaning they run poorly. Doesn't matter much why they get worse performance, they get worse performance nearly universally.

If that were actually true, you wouldn't have games like BF4, where only the i7 CPUs perform better than the FX series. Just because the aren't as powerful as another CPU means nothing, an i5 is more expensive than an i3 but that's meaningless as the prices are different.

You say only the i7s beat the FX series in BF4? Not true. The stronger i3s and i5s beat the FX series in BF4.

Every professional review warns that the FX series has the wrong architecture for gaming, the original poster is being heavily bottlenecked by his FX-6300, and all you want to do is prop up the FX line and try to say there's nothing wrong with it? What's your goal, to try to convince the original poster to keep the CPU that's currently getting him poor performance because theoretically there are 1-2 games where it's not terrible? Smh.

It's not that expensive to get the right stuff, you might be able to return your recently bought parts.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor ($112.09 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-E33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($44.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $157.08
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I don't know why you bought more ram though, 12gbs was already overkill.

Wow won't use more than 4gbs of ram anyways, and windows won't be using more than 500mbs of ram.

My point isn't to sway OP to only use FX at all but to instead say that AMD isn't as bad as you say. It just depends on what you are doing and budget.

That's misleading because BF4 was specifically designed to take advantage of the extra cores of the FX series. It's the same problem when using the CPU benchmark software that favors intel CPUs.

More than that, AMD poured money into BF4 to urge DICE to use AMD's compiler, which gimps Intel CPUs. And Intel still ends up ahead in the reliable BF4 benchmarks. The i3s, i5s, and i7s are just that much stronger.

Furthermore, I'm not sure I trust the benchmark Blaise linked. It shows the i7-4770K is ahead of the FX-9590, yet the i5-4670K is shown as further from the i7-4770K than the FX-8350 is to the FX-9590. That's a highly suspect inconsistency; there should be a larger gap between the FX-8350 and FX-9590 than between the i7 and i5, yet that benchmark shows the opposite.

Furthermore, the site appears to be a Russian fansite for AMD; they benchmark and advertise almost entirely AMD CPUs and GPUs.

When compared with the benchmark I linked, which is highly consistent to other tests by comparison, It makes me suspect that the FX-8350 numbers in Blaise' benchmark were assigned randomly, perhaps just bumped 1-2 fps above the i5-4670K out of bias.

So yes, I'm saying the benchmark that shows an FX-8350 even coming remotely close to i5 performance is fake.
