Hi good people,

Should be a fairly simple one this, but wanted to ask. After a power cut last night my PC won't turn on. Two things:

- It was plugged into a surge protector. The surge protector is possibly 8 years old, still shows a green light for "protected".
- The power cut was weird. Not something I've seen in the the UK before. LED lights in the house glowed, and some electrical stuff - e.g. dehumidifer in another room, speakers attached to PC - still had lights showing. I guess the power was not to be totally off. After around 5 minutes, the power increased again, and LED bulbs now had a dim glow (a bit like a dark room) for another minute before everything came back on properly.

I think the most likely solution is that I have a dead PSU, would that be the place to start?

Absolutely nothing happens, completely dead.

I turned the surge bar off and on, and the main power switch on the back of the PSU off and on. Didn't expect that to fix it, and of course it didn't.

Other stuff plugged into the surge bar still works, but I will try without it after work. After that, I suppose it's a fun evening of removing the PSU and hoping my back-up can do the job.

You can check the psu by hotwiring the black and green wire on the 24pin connector, maybe use a paperclip for that or ....
Maybe keep the switch on the psu longer on "of".
Even try to get most of the power out of the system by removing the bios battery and draining the system by holding the power button for a while.

So I came home tonight and it works. #@&$-ing thing.

I am not a complete idiot (I've changed a PSU before without too much drama), so I am happy to stand here - using my real name and all - and profess I don't think I did anything totally stupid.

It was 7+ hours after the power cut when I tried this morning. And despite trying repeatedly, it just didn't work. Now it does. I am sort of interested to know why. My understanding of any possible reason sort of boils down to something something capacitors.

Thanks for the help, and sorry for any wasted time.
