Hi everyone,

I like to build a network to access the Internet with the following equipment:
- Switch
- D-Link Wireless N300 Router – DIR-605L
- 3G internet stick (USB)

As you can see, the problem is that the router only accepts land modem. I am wondering if there’s a way to hack it such that the Router will access the Internet through the 3G stick?

I am working with an NGO in Uganda. So, IT supplies are hard to come by and like to keep it as low cost and simple as possible.

If anyone have any suggestions that can allow us to access the internet without acquiring another modem, I will be greatly appreciated it.

Thanks!
Cliff

You can connect it to the wan port but I would connect it to the LAN port and disable the DHCP in the router. This would let the ICS in the PC give out ip to your end devices. You would only use the dlink as a AP. You can use the wan port but it makes it even more complex you now have 3 level of NAT.
Depends what you mean hack the router. If this router already had a USB port then maybe you could modify the software to accept a 3g modem. Your problem is that the router does not even have the hardware to connect the USB device to. To "hack" the router you would have to add chips to the router board which I doubt can even be done without very specialized equipment that cost more than buying a new router.

The only way you could even think to do this was if you had a PC that could act as a modem to connect the USB internet to the router. This feature is called ICS but you would need a pc you could leave on all the time that supports the USB internet and has a ethernet port.

Thanks bill001g.

I did considered ICS. My problem is that in the router what do i set up the WAN type? I assume you do it this way.

3G stick connect to windows machine. Windows machine is enabled ICS. Windows machine connect to router via network cable to WAN port.

Thanks!
