Are you sure it's not the ink that's drying out 'cos it's left unused for too long? Inkjet printers do not like being rarely used. They are not suitable for people who leave them unused for more than 6 or 7 days, especially HP & Epson printers.
If you rarely need one you should consider getting a nearby friend to print stuff for you. Offer to pay them for their time and you'll still be spending less than your HP ink was costing you.
