So I have been using an amazing gaming pc with the following specs during this summer... 2 gtx770's, 4770k @ 4.5 Ghz, gigabyte z97 mobo, 16gb Corsair Vengeance 1866Mhz, 800 watt psu, and a single Samsung 1080p monitor. Now for me sli has been pretty awesome, just destroying most of the games in my library. I have been mostly blessed. But they have only 2gb of vram and the dawn of the vram hungry games is upon us gamers as well as the release of the 800 series cards. So my question is, within the next few months, especially when Christmas comes around, what one video card would be a decent upgrade from this sli setup that would also give roughly the same performance, obviously better drivers with just one card. Any suggestions would be appreciated. And yes if you do it right sli can give a huge performance increase in many games from the past few years. Thanks and cheers.

Solution
A single GTX 880 will be a downgrade from two GTX 770s SLI, even with 4 GB of memory. If you're playing on 1080p or 1440p, then you should be fine with what you already have.

The 800 series will NOT be able to power 4k monitors alone. They will still need SLI. The major upgrade for the new series is power consumption. They use less power. From leaks and estimates, they're maybe, MAYBE, 10-20% more powerful than existing 700 series cards.

If you have money to burn, sure, get the 800 series when it comes out soon. Otherwise, I'd say wait a year or two for something else.

I am guessing every game you play with that set up is running great fps even at ultra detail settings. I do not think any game in a year or two needs more than you currently have to run at highest settings smoothly. Because i have a single 770 2gb and have been considering SLI only for arma 3, because a single 770 on ultra runs so-so fps. On any other game its fine.

Thanks guys, everyone yes for now I will continue to have this one monitor but I am a high school senior this year and once i go to college I might get a 1440p monitor with higher refresh rate. And yes the 770's give great fps for now with current drivers and support. and I don't need anything now but there are many games coming out between this fall and the first half of 2015 that I know will need more vram and I cannot guarantee myself that sli of these 770's with 2gb will get so much better than their current state, especially in terms of sli technology itself. I had the possible idea of waiting to see if Nvidia decided to double the vram on the 780ti and get one of those and later expand upon that. When the 800 series rolls out not only will they be hard to get, but also expensive. others have told me to maybe get a 780 6gb but my 2 770's are more powerful than a 780ti or titan in certain games so that would be a huge drawback in fps. We shall see what happens but like i said i will wait until the end of the year to see what might be possible. Again so far thanks for the feedback guys. Also, ubermcnoober i never thought that a second 770 could add so much fps but for me it has, and they are much cheaper now than they were a few months ago.

Yeah. Bummer about that. I have two 770 4gb cards and my machine is fantastic. Why dont you sell the 2 770's and get a single 780 6gb card? Then next year you can pick up another 780 and be on easy street for the next 4 or 5 years.
