Can I upgrade to this CPU?

Hello all, first post here.

I bought a computer from HP a while back, and I've been slowly upgrading the internals.

I am interested in finding out as to whether or not I could possibly upgrade to this processor:
NewEgg

My [motherboard specs]

There are a few issues I was wondering if I could get past. First, I've got a 750W power supply in my computer (Not sure if that'll be useful info or not), second I believe the 9590 recommends the chipset 990FX, and I have the FX-970 (I believe I read somewhere that this wouldn't be a huge deal, but wanted to clear it)

Another thing is that it is a 220W CPU, and I am almost certain my motherboard has a TDP up to 125W, How much of a problem would this be? (Can I fix it somehow?)

Thanks!

If you use the FX 9590 in your system, you are most likely to:
-Fry your mobo
-Fry your power supply
-Fry the CPU itself
-Fry the whole system.

The FX 9590 is overpriced, overheats and is only compatible with four select 990FX motherboards. You also need liquid cooling to keep that thing under 40C idle. What is your current CPU? You may not have to upgrade it after all.

Hello,

There will be a big problem: apart from the fact that your PC could not be posting anyway, you could easily damage your motherboard; after all, we're talking of a CPU with an TDP almost double than the maximum allowed TDP for your motherboard... Also, your motherboard is not meant for any heavy lifting, as the CPU power circuitry has only 4 phases (that means even the FX-8120/8150 will have problems in the long run).

Seems a bit harsh, I understand the wattage is much higher than my max, but couldn't it be fine, with sufficient cooling?

I'm currently using an AMD FX-6120, and would prefer to not upgrade my motherboard if I don't have to. (Limited budget). If you have another recommended processor that would be OK then I'm all ears, but it seems most other compatible AMD processors are only a few steps better than the AMD FX-6120, I'd rather go all the way.

Is there a specific cooler you could recommend? How long is the "long run"?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, the problem is not the cooler, but the motherboard itself... The long run for me is at least a couple of years.

EDIT: what are your doing with your system? For gaming, a better GPU is the way to go, your have a decent CPU.

I intend on changing the motherboard within a few months, would it be safe to use the 9590 on the 970 chipset, with the wrong TDP? I don't care if it fries the mobo slowly as I intend on trashing it anyways. Thanks again!

EDIT: I have a GTX 660 SuperClocked, which is quite fine and does what I want. I do game every now and then, however I'm not a hardcore gamer. I might play BF4 twice a week or something along those lines.

If you want to change the motherboard anyway, change to Intel and go for an i5-4590K/i7-4790K, which will give you way more power than any FX, no matter how much overclocked.

Ok, as far as I know, the most powerful CPU you can upgrade to without damaging your system is the FX 8350. You will also need sufficient cooling for that too. I would recommend the Hyper 212 EVO.

Also, like Cristi72 said, the GPU is generally more important for gaming rather than the CPU. What's your graphics card?

Perhaps so, but the CPU is about $80 more disallowing me from making an immediate purchase, additionally preventing me from using the card before I buy another MOBO.

I'm using an EVGA GTX 660 SC. Would there be immediate damage to other internals if I switched to the 9590?

You are saying that the i5 is 80$ more; I am positively sure that you are buying the 9590 and you will not be able to use it on that motherboard, not being officially supported by HP (mind you, it is a HP board, so it is highly unlikely such company will support the newest CPUs on their old motherboards; heck, it might be that even an FX-6300/FX-8300/ FX-8350 will not work on your motherboard, despite being only 125W TDP).

There may not be immediate damage as your PC will probably shut down to prevent damage but if you keep trying to get it to work, there may be damaged components. Also, even if you intend on changing the motherboard at a later date, the FX 9590 still wouldn't function on your current motherboard, rendering it useless until you get a new one.
