I am going to be building a gaming PC and am planning on using the Intel i5 4690K as a proccesor. Just to cover my bases, what would be the equivalent AMD processor? Also, what is the actual difference between AMD and Intel processors? (besides the brand)

More about : amd intel

They have different approaches to CPU design and AMD usually lags about a generation or two behind when it comes to manufacturing processes. Though they are responsible for the CPU architecture standard that Intel chips are made from (AMD64 / x86-64) Intel developed the original x86 standard.

Right now, Intel is the only smart choice for a desktop build unless you are on a tight budget. Per core and per clock cycle (instructions per cycle) Intel wins hands down.

AMD FX chips are built using a dual core package technique, so each module contains two cores and an ALU (Algorithm Logic Unit) This gives you a total of 8 cores for about %50 the cost of an i7 chip with hyperthreading (8 logical cores)

The i5 you have chosen has 4 physical cores. The majority of software can use between 1 and 3 cores effectively. And those cores are about 30% faster then the cores found in FX processors.

Intel CPUs consume less power as well. (The manufacturing advantage shows here)

In short:
AMD costs less and you get more bang for your buck but uses more power (AMD offers more CPUs with overclocking capabilities and the motherboards are cheaper)
Intel costs more but is the performance and efficiency leader
