Situation:
So I have a work computer that was moved into an office further away from the wireless access point. The on-board wireless card is too weak, so I found a TP-Link N600 wireless dual band PCIe Adapter card. I used the software that came with it to install the drivers for it.

The problem:
When I install the card, Windows recognizes the hardware, but fails to install. So I proceeded to install the drivers from the software disc that comes with. After installing the drivers, Network Adapters recognizes the device. I disabled the on-board before this, but when I go to connect to my network, the computer gets all slow and doesn't want to do anything. It doesn't shutdown properly. Sometimes when I log in, I get the black screen with the mouse and nothing else.

Troubleshooting:
I tried installing the card in a different PCIe slot, I tried installing drivers with software and with just drivers, I tried looking for current up-to-date drivers via website, but it looks like it doesn't exist anymore.

Specs:
Dell Vostro 260 MT desktop with Windows 7 Pro
TP-Link N600 Wireless Dual Band PCIe Adapter (TL-WDN 3800) 300Mbps

I've gotten the drivers to work now with the TP-Link software. I get three bars, but I get limited access when I connect. I'm starting to think that a stronger card will be my next move.

NEVER download drivers from 3rd party sites... ONLY manufacturers sites or resellers (like Dell, HP, etc).

http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-WDN3800#down is the proper site for this card I think.

If you're not getting a strong signal, then you need to move either the computer or the router. Wireless is flaky that way, the smallest thing can interfere with signals. Your wireless card should be fine. Make sure the router or pc is not up against a metal shelf, or other obstacles as much as possible.

You might look into powerline adapters... they allow you to have a connection as good as direct wired, using your home electrical wires instead of stringing ethernet cables all over. You can even get one with a wireless access point at the far end as well as ethernet connections:

With wireless access point: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704197

It is known that the TP-link software can cause slow and disconnect problems, I recommend removing all software and drivers and do a clean install of the drivers ONLY.
