I was wondering, I have a Telus (Actiontec) V1000h router/modem combination, and I don't think they have any other hardware options on account of this needing a co-ax jack for the TV service we have.

I want to try and set up the network so that I can control the new router (ideally, an Asus RT-N66U) and its firewall settings, without having to worry about working through the PoS that is the V1000h and its terrible firewall software.

So my question is, is there a way I can basically connect the Asus router, but give it full control to the firewall? I was hoping for something like putting it in a DMZ, but I'm thinking that would create network conflicts or something.

Anyhow, any insight into how I might accomplish this is much appreciated. Thank you.

Well usually with routers today all you have to do is just connect it to the modem and you are set. As far as the firewall situation all you have to do is type in the access gateway into your web browser then got to firewall settings. After that you should have full control over the firmware and such.

NOTE: It will ask for a username/password by default it should be User:admin Pass:admin or User:admin Pass:p assword. It will be specified in the manual when bought.

I've done that on the V1000h (which is a router AND a modem) but I hate it so. Problem is I have to keep it for its modem capability and because it has a co-ax for the TV service.

I'm hoping to use the ASUS for most things. In theory, could I just hook up the ASUS and demilitarize its ip?

well each product has its own interface. It could be a hit or miss but maybe you can find a video or screenshot.
