Hey everybody,

I am looking to build a gaming pc for around under £900-£1000. Considering that I won't actually be physically building the system until november/december, I am open to ideas above the price mark as hopefully component prices will drop.

I was originally set on an amd 8350 cpu, but after looking around forums such as this it seemed as if its performance in single-core-heavy games (such as WoW, my main game) is sub-standard compared to the more expensive intel processors.

I would like the build to easily manage ultra settings (with some high) on most games.

I will mostly be playing games such as WoW, ESO, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and NV, Arma III etc.

Many thanks to this amazing community,

Sam

This build is amazing and can run any game on ultra, with immense fps! :

Hey dude, thanks for such a fast reply and what looks like an awesome build!

How would that cpu shape up against something such as an i5 4670K?

Thanks again

I agree that Xeon E3 builds are pretty sweet but I made quite a few changes:

A R9 290 is plenty of power, you should only be looking at the 290x or 780 ti if you plan on having a multi-monitor gaming setup running (game playing across 3 screens) or are playing at 1440p IMO. THe stock cooler is enough for the E3 1230v3 and the Corsair cx uses cheap capacitors so I don't recommend them.

Edit: Xeon E3 1230v3 (or higher numbered) are basically i7s that are locked (no OC) and do not have an integrated GPU (no loss here since you are getting a discrete GPU). The i5 4690k is unlocked so it can be overclocked but it does not have the extra threads that the Xeon E3 or the i7 have.

Hey, I am looking to use 2 monitors eventually, one for use with the game and the other for general purposes (internet-surfing etc).

Thanks.

This xeon is basically a core i7 just without the overclocking cabalities, and alothough it matches the the 4670k in gaming (atleast until games utilize more cores), in everything else it destroys it :)

What if I want to over clock, even mildly?

Using 2 monitors is pretty easy for almost any gaming GPU now (I do it with a gtx 760). The 780 ti is overkill unless you are playing games at 5760x1080 or have a 1440p screen. Just trying to save you some money :)

But if you want the most powerful GPU out then grab a gtx 780 ti (until the 880 series comes out :D )

Then the Xeon E3s are not for you.

If you want to overclock at all, you need a build with either a i5 4690k or an i7 4790k on a Z97 motherboard with a CPU cooler.

haha i guess so :D  I'm planning on starting at only 1080p, so would you say 760 or 770? Also, I am open to the idea of amd processors too, as I'm hoping that their WoW performance isn't as bad as everyone says it is D:

They locked it on the xeon (Why i chose a h87 motherboard). But the xeon performs better in everything. Unless you want to spend the extra money on a z97 motherboard and an i7 cpu to get practically the same performance :p

The AMDs processors are much weaker at any single-quad core program compared to the i5s. wow uses 1-2 cores and runs much better on Intel CPUs, if you are a big WoW player, stick to intel.

For the GPu at 1080p I would get the gtx 770 or the R9 280x or R9 290. If you strongly prefer Nvidia Cards then the gtx 780 (no ti) is also a viable option at your budget.

Okay, thanks. So in my circumstance, amd< Xeon< i5< i7 ;D

If you are gaming on only one monitor then yes an r9 290 is a very good choice for the price imo although the 780 ti still beats it. Id personally go for the r9 290 in your case!

Well that depends on what you are doing. For most games it would be amd<i5<Xeon=i7 but the Xeon cannot be overclocked to a higher speed so if you want an OC build the Xeon simply doesn't get consideration.
