thanks for the reply. My next question is how does one reboot a clean hard drive? Do the drivers for the dvd go in first or windows 7?
The computer belonged to our daughter and she took it to a friend of a friend who charged her $40 to wipe the hard drive and reinstall win 7. Evidently he used a pirated copy that totally crashed the hard drive. So she brought it back to me. She just graduated college and said she doesn't need anymore (she does need a computer). So...l would like to get it back in working order. I know just enough to be dangerous.
Thanks for your patience.
Or...would it be better (cheaper) to just buy her a new one?

thanks again

If you get a copy of Windows 7 (Or another appropriate operating system), you literally just chuck it in the DVD Drive and follow the on-screen tutorial though from that, that will give you a fresh install of windows 7 and format the hard-drives, when it is installed you can download all of the appropriate drivers online and it will be working as brand new.

O.K. I'm looking for a legal win7 dvd and am not certain which one to buy, win 7 oem, win 7 pro, a cheaper option is to download it.
I don't want a hassle with an authorization code that does not come with it.
Any suggestions?

Also...I can't wrap my head around the need to down load drivers for hardware to the new hard drive but yet I can just pop the new win7 dvd into the dvd (before downloading new drivers)and it will read it . What is it I am missing ?

Thanks for your time and expertise
