A budget and possible uses might help. Are you looking for something with some spunk to it? Do you want something that you can upgrade everything from the processor to the graphics or just add RAM and a graphics card later on down the road? Does anyone in the family enjoy high end gaming? Or just playing online chess?

All in all you can have a 10 year old PC that you got at a pawn shop for 50 bucks run dual monitors and play online chess and run microsoft office.

Just need a little more info and then maybe we can help more.

Very spunky under $1200 budget, would like intel i7 quad, air cooled, no overclocking, no high end gaming as far as graphics but I was under the impression that engine chess was high end because those guys use overclocked 8 and 12 cpu game rigs. My main goal is to accomplish the build and gain some confidence. I don't need a monitor at this time.

I threw in a link to Office Home and Business 2010 in case you needed it, though it put me 50 dollars over budget. I was able to add a nice monitor and include the operating system. I did a little more looking into chess engine, and it appears depending on which build you go with is what determines the amount of raw power needed. I went ahead and gave the i7 and 16 gb of ram to help with that. I couldn't really find any "Specs" for what chess engines advise for optimal performance but I added a nice mid range graphics card that will allow a second monitor in the future. I wasn't sure if you wanted a case with lighting so I chose a nice looking plain black case with nice cable management and adequate cooling. I left you with the stock fan on the processor since you're not overclocking as you will not need any more than that.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll be checking in and out of various posts all night so I'll try to help you as best I can.
