Will a GTX 780 be good for me?

Hello All,

I'm building my first PC for gaming and I have everything decided on after 2 months of research except a video card. I'm currently running a single monitor and I don't plan on purchasing a new one or dual any time soon. My max resolution is 1920x1200.

Would a GTX 780 run all current games on Ultra/Max/Very high settings? My CPU will be i5 4690k. AND if I do get a bigger monitor in future, what resolutions would a GTX 780 struggle at?

I want to play Skyrim, Metro 1 & 2, Witcher 2, and Crysis 3...all at highest settings. Also I've been dying to fully Mod Skyrim so based on what I've read so far I was thinking the 780 6GB version. I welcome all feed back.

Thank you for your help.

As you can see in the reviews, the SC is in last place or tied for last place in the reviews

If you are willing to use a tool like MSI aAfterburner to overclock, the 780 tops any other single GPU card on the market other than the 780 Ti at resolutions up to 2560 x 1080. See 8:40 mark in video below. Higher than that you might wanna look at the 290x.

Here's a guide as to what to expect from the 780 at stock settings in 1, 2 and 3 card configurations..... scaling has obviously improved as SLI profiles have come with new driver releases for CF or SLI. I would recommend that you get an 850 watt PSU cause 18 - 24 months down the line that will allow for an easy and significant speed bump.

As for which one to get ..... I use the MSI's and the Asus ones.... Asus was better upon 1st release but MSI retooled a few months after this review and their card now rocks..... it's also very much quieter than any of the others, sometimes even half as loud.

Thank you very much for the info.

Some good reading that I haven't seen.

I do however play Skyrim(my favorite game) on some very crappy settings right now and zero mods. Would the Superclocked 6GB EVGA 780 be good for a fully modded Skyrim...or would a 3GB of any other choices suffice? I have no idea what mods I will use or how many, so my question is vague I know. But what would suit me? 6GB or 3GB?

Thanks again for the info...Im quite excited to get the 780 now. I will get the Superclocked but 3GB is multiple choice and EVGA is the only 6GB.

Here is my build via pcpartpicker....

I'll put it out there so ppl can give me opinions for my first build...

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/X3gNYJ

Please let me know your opinions or ideas. I'm close to placing the order, but I want some feedback in case there is something I missed.

My build is trying to be semi-future proof...and BIG upgrade to what I have now. Also I went with ease of install for first build. Let me know what you think. Please. Including the 6GB vs 3 GB 780.

Thanks

As you can see here, when tested with the 2GB 770 versus 4GB 770, no game of the 30 tested showed a substantial improvement going from 2GB to 4GB at 1920 x 1080..... some went slower. Note that just because a game can "use" or "claim" it's using more than 2 GB, that doesn't men it actually benefits from it.

http://alienbabeltech.com/main/gtx-770-4gb-vs-2gb-tested/3/#prettyPhoto

Let’s only look at the games where there is more than a single FPS difference between the two GTX 770s @ 5760 x 1080.

SubChart.jpg

At 1920 x 1080, this was ....

Metro went from 31.0 to 31.8 fps
Lost Planet 2 went from 85.8 to 85.2
Dirt Showdown went from 70.4 to 70.5
Sleeping Dogs went from 53.4 to 53.5
Hitman Absolution went from 49.6 to 49.8
Grid 2 went from 83.4 to 83.5
Last Light went from 44.5 to 45.8

Now the important part .....

There is one last thing to note with Max Payne 3: It would not normally allow one to set 4xAA at 5760×1080 with any 2GB card as it claims to require 2750MB. However, when we replaced the 4GB GTX 770 with the 2GB version, the game allowed the setting. And there were no slowdowns, stuttering, nor any performance differences that we could find between the two GTX 770s.

Getting the better MSI 780 3 Gb saves ya $110

As to the build...

MoBo / CPU - Ya paying $418 for ya MoBo / CPU Combo .... this saves $38 for an equivalent MoBo

RAM:
DDR3-1600 w/ better timings saves $7
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226388

DDR3-1866 for +$10
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231615

DDR3-2133 for +10
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226420

I'd take the 2133 in a heartbeat for $10 over the 1600 not only because it's a nice speed bump, it also has better timings than the competition and because it has premium Hynix modules (Gold Standard) for a 0.5% increase in system cost.

PSU - The Hx850 is one of the best PSUs ever made but this one is it's match and is $40 cheaper.

Case - Storm Scout is a decent case which garners a 9.2 rating but it's feature set doesn't match the Enthoo Pro which is $10 cheaper, won Case of the Year for 2014 and and gets a 9.5 rating

Phanteks Enthoo Pro - Black is $100 / White is $110 - Great air cooling or entry water cooling build.

Burner - The Asus version will save ya $16

Unless ya **need** Bitlocker, there's no reason to get Ultimate ...saves another $48

One more thought..... is ya willing to pay $590 for the 6 GB 780, the MSI 780 Ti is only $80 more .... the changes above save you $110....so you could have a 780 Ti and still put $30 back in your pocket.

Solution

3 GB is just fine for the RAM, and the 780 will run anything at top settings. I play Skyrim at high with pretty smooth frames on an Intel Q9650 with a GTX265 so no worries that your new system will run it. Hope you enjoy your new computer!

That case is perfect for the price!

I placed my order, thanks for all the advice.

I do have an additional question regarding fan set up though while I'm on here. How should I set up my fans? I have 2 extra 120's to use and with the 200 monster as an intake in front a 140 in back for exhaust how should I set up my 2x120's on top? Maybe intake in front-top and one top-rear as exhaust? Or both Exhaust? or both intake? Any input is appreciated. Thanks again for the help.
