Hi all, I'm new to tom's hardware forums. My reason for joining is due to my PC crashing last Sunday. After a windows update, my PC kept restarting in an endless loop (diagnostics tools, system repair window) I had no choice but to do a fresh installation of windows again.

I learned my lesson when it comes to backing up data, don't over look it, you never know when something wrong will happen. I bought an external hard drive just for that reason.

Now my question is what software/process should I use to maintain a healthy copy of my data/windows? Currently I am creating a system image with windows, but I feel its not the best solution to this. Also how can I clone my drive so if my main drive should crash I can have a spare drive to boot from? (preferably from my external drive)

I just want to be prepared for a situation like this. (This is a worst case scenario for me)

I appreciate any answers.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows Update, I'm going to guess you got caught in the weird font bug they weren't aware of until going live. For basic backing up, Windows' built-in utility is pretty solid, since it lets you choose what to back up and what sort of backups you want.

It would seem so. Microsoft has only one job and they failed.... For now I created a rescue thumb drive and have the system image on my external drive. I didn't suffer too much because my SSD is my boot drive. My other 2 drives I use for programs and file backups. But it was a pain to re install my programs and games just because everything changed.
