I have 2 DX4850 computers (mine and my wife’s). My computer is fine. My wife’s computer is infected with a virus. After doing some research on the internet I’ve learned that her computer has the “Windows 7 Media Center virus.”
This virus has changed the associations for all “Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations” to launch Windows 7 Media Center, so her system is completely unusable. Even booting “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” doesn’t work, because I have to login to the defective account.
According to my research on this virus it is very dangerous and very difficult to successfully remove so I want to start over with a clean install. I physically removed the hard drive and attached it to my computer via a docking station & USB and copied her photos and docs to a thumb drive. Now I want to completely wipe the HDD before installing the Gateway software from the CDs I created from her computer.
My question is this: If I completely wipe the HDD, using DoD (Department of Defense) secure methods to overwrite the surface many times, then format the disk, will I be able to successfully restore the system and applications using the Recovery disks? (I understand that the eRecovery function will no longer be installed on the drive. That’s ok)
