Desktop turns black - Windows can't start

Hi guys,
Today, when I turned on my PC, instead of finding the nice "Starting Windows Screen" I was greeted by the "Windows Error Recovery". I started Windows normally, and when it loaded the desktop it was black. Now I've had a problem before with this and it was because the ,monitor cable was unplugged? I also saw a black line gpoing vertically across the screen. Is this a graphics/monitor issue? My son was the last to use my PC and he sometimes turns the PC off via the power swith - which causes windows failing to start. If its not this, does it have anything to do with the black desktop? Many thanks,
AKNerd

Ok thanks, have you tried a system restore? as it sounds like windows file that control the desktop the explorer.exe is not loading properly, sounds like because it hasn't been shut down properly it got corrupted,

So best bet is too boot in safe mode hit f8 during start up and do a system restore which should do the trick hopefully, if not then you will have to do a system repair with your windows disc.

sure some of the experts on here, might have a different idea of what to do. but normally a system restore will fix the problem

Thank you very much for your support. However, I think it may be a graphics problem as my experience with Dell monitors is that the desktops go black if they're not plugged in properly. What also hints that this may be a graphics problem is that there was a black ine going vertically across the screen. Is this a graphics problem rather than a corrupt file?

Hi Aknerd,

Ok can you test the PC on any other monitor? like a TV or something (assuming you have the right connections on your tv or running the monitor via an HDMI lead) , just to rule out a dead monitor?

are you using onboard graphics or a internal graphic card? if you are using a graphic card, try plugging your monitor direct to the motherboard outlet instead to see if it is the monitor not a corrupt file.

i assume you can get into bios and see the windows logo on boot up?
