battery life is depends on hardware spec and user usage.. so can not tells much..

Own 2 lenovo lappy and work with 2 dell ones at office...
i can said both are goods brands.. their quality both better than some others brands..

now it back to specific model u looking for,
since some model get cost saving treatment (since their targeted budget market)..

u're right but i handled with dell but felt it's not ok in material issue .. i don't know
i have to choose between dell inspiron i7 4500u and amd 8850m 2GB DDR3 and lenovo i7 4510u+Nvidia gt 840m 4GB DDR3 and i wish i could play new games smoothly with high graphics

I'm not to familiar with upper level notebook, mainly mid - low level and I can testify both lenovo & dell build quality is more better than the same level from asus, acer, toshiba.... (people here work with laptop and not much on desktop pc)

for your need, which one better in spec/hardware wise, i will let other with more experience give opinion..

btw for myself I buy lenovo for sole reason it's cheaper here then dell one (with same spec)...

Depends on which kinds of models. In general, Dell XPS and Lenovo Thinkpad series have great build quality.

Those processor/GPU combos are pretty close to each other. At that point it's more down to price/quality and any other considerations. Don't expect new games smoothly with high graphics, though. Newer games will manage low to medium settings for the most part unless they have particularly low graphics requirements.
