I had a 2TB drive that was in NTFS, I use it sparingly but now it reads in xp/win8.1 but it wants to reformat it and comes up as RAW. I can see the files are still there so I know its dying I'm just trying to grab the files off it so I can let it die in piece..I read this thread

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/283116-32-recover-ntfs-partition-drive

my question is how does one fix a bad partition table? I see many 3rd party programs for this problem but I'm looking for one that is pretty simple or at least a tutorial as I know one bad move can render this drive a fancy paper weight :)

Solution
Rather than fix the partition, my advice (which you are welcome to ignore) is to
1) Use various recovery software to copy the files that you need to another drive.
2) Use this drive as a paperweight. I personally never trust a drive that has failed once.

If you want to try step 1, I believe that it's safer than trying to fix the drive in-place. The latter can be done, but carries more risk. I can post links to threads with recommendations for software.
