The chipset is a set of curcuits on the motherboard that handle the instructions between your CPU, RAM ect.. Commonly referred to as Northbridge and southbridge.
For an Intel board I would recommend a series 9 chipset. so a Z97 or H97 motherboard. These boards are the latest design and will be compatible with the next design of CPUs. If you have no interest in Overclocking and just want basic use then a H97 motherboard is fine. if you are not concerned with future upgrades then get a H87 board, it should be the cheapest of the three options.

why suggest a z97 board for i3 processor ????? first of all z97 series are for unlocked CPu and h97 would work with the i3 but a h81 or h87 will run the i3 without any problem and will save a lot of money.....

I said they were compatible. I have no idea what his plans are to upgrade down the line. for all I know he might get an i7 K series next year, just giving him room to grow.
Towards the end of my post I noted that the H8 series would be the cheapest options.
