Wireline vs Wireless

So, if I'm having a decent 6 Mbps connection from a standard ISP for my PC.. I've planned to place my router on the PC table itself.. So, I need to know which one to use for constant speeds all the time.. I'll be using internet all day since my work is in the computer.. What will be more beneficial? Ethernet or connecting though wireless network adapter? Also, does every router has the option to TURN ON the ethernet alone (keeping the WiFiturned off until i manually turn it on using a switch/slider, etc)???

Solution
That is the big problem is wireless is unpredictable. It is very subject to random interference. Wired connections are almost immune to external interference. So how do you compare something that takes close to zero errors with one that take some unknown number but far more than zero.

The performance if you were not constrained by your 6m internet connection is huge. A wired connection can run 40g full duplex..ie 80g. Even the best wireless has a total bandwidth of 1.3g and it can get nowhere close to that. Even a simple consumer router with 1g ethernet ports can actually really pass 2g total traffic with no errors. Wireless test sites have managed to push 802.11ac routers to maybe 500m total in optimum conditions.

In general...
A wired connection will be more reliably faster. What you are looking for is a way to disable the radio in the router's management software. That will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

I don't remember ever seeing a manual switch to disable the radio but I haven't seen all that many. You could possibly install a manual switch with some judicious hardware hacking (and void your warranty at the same time).

In general you will not see much difference but when you sit very close to the wireless but when you compare something that is almost 100% reliable to anything else why would you even bother use anything else

Solution
If your desktop is close to the router, definitely plug it directly in. It will be more stable, faster and more secure.

I don't know of any router that can turn their wireless off and still function. If you want that feature, than plug your modem into a switch, and plug your computer into the switch. Than you can have a wifi router, plugged directly into the switch, and used as needed (aka, can unplug when not needed.)
