I have recently purchased another monitor 24" runs 1920x1080 so now i have 2x 1920x1080 monitors. my Video card is Ati Radeon 4300/4500 series (abit old i know) it has a dvi port and a vga, however both my monitor uses vga so i use a vga-dvi adaptor. the result is that the vga port monitor is able to display 1920x1080 but the one using dvi adaptor can only display 1600x1200 at max the computer can not detect its name and is named as default to generic non pnp monitor. please help me to find a way to make both 1920x1080

I had this issue way back when I was using a VGA monitor, allbeit just one of them.

The solution was to invest in a good quality converter. Those little white ones are cheap and god awful.
You may also need to buy a different cable.

Due to the nature of VGA being an analog signal, the quality of the display you get depends entirely on the connection in use. Hence why a cheap cable/converter can give such drastic results.

Is the monitor you purchased new? If so, what is the make and model of the monitor. Most newer monitors I have seen these days come with the ability to have both VGA and DVI cables. Have you checked the back to see if it will take a DVI cable? I am sorry this does not answer your question, but I am hoping to give you more options. I personally would rather have it plugged directly to DVI instead of through an adapter.

Also, have you made sure that your video card drivers are up to date with the most recent drivers? Since it is an ATI card, try looking through the catalyst control center. Under Desktop Management and then Desktop Properties.

I hope this helps.

One of the slightly more expensive black/gold ones are the ticket.

If your monitor/s have HDMI, it's probably a better solution to buy an adapter for that rather than VGA. HDMI is a digital signal in the same way DVI is, so there isn't as much fart-arsing about looking for a decent cable.

Good luck!

Can't say as I have much experience with them, or your card, but this should do the trick:

There's also similar adapters available to the one in the previous post, but this negates the need for buying a HDMI cable to go into it.
