This is the build i've got lined up: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/f4FyHx

Now i currently do my gaming on my PS4, so i wouldn't be doing any next-gen on that setup, more past games that i can't get on PS4... But i'm getting pretty fed up of my PS4 and its issues, so lets say 4 months down the line i decide to get rid of it; could i just throw in a £400+ GPU and be able to run next gen games? Or would my CPU hold me back? I would add in an after-market cooler and overclock. Would the PSU be sufficient? Or would it be worth getting rid of my PS4 now and look at a new build that way...

the build is good and can handle most modern games at ultra settings the cpu is not that strong but it is strong enough to support the r9 270x.....the psu will handle the card with the oc no problem there but personally i would prefer 550watt of psu for little bit of more headroom as u are going to oc.....

That doesn't look like a next gen gaming-proof build. i5 would be a better choice as more and more games are getting multi core optimized and even FX 8xxx doesn't beat the i5 there. Get a decent 520W Antec HCG/ XFX 550W Pro/ SeaSonic SII 620W. Add a SSD and more RAM to be able to play next gen games.
A 400+ bucks GPU would probably suffice for 2-4 years of ultra with 50+ FPS :)

more RAM (8GBs already) to play next gen game....maybe you should stick to CPUs
