I just learned that my Radeon 6670 GPU has variable fan speed.
Not kidding for the longest time I thought it was fixed speed because it is so quiet and the CPU
fan is so loud.

I didn't notice until a wire fell into it and started grinding and I heard the speed change.

Anyway now that I know that it is multi speed I set up MSI afterburner fan profile
(if anything to save fan wear and limit the dust getting in at low load)
But the question is does MSI AB have to be running or does it program the drivers so
it will control the speed without it running?

For your user fan speeds? yes. If AB isn't running then there's no OC or User Controlled Fan Speeds. However if you weren't running MSI AB and was happy with what you were seeing (temps) and what you were hearing (fan noise) then you could just uninstall it and not bother with it.

Well another reason I run MSI AB is because I like to have the OSD so I guess I will have to run it.

Depending on the info you're putting on the screen for the OSD you can do with this fraps and other programs like this but without the rest of the stuff that's part of AB.

It does have to be running for your profile to be active. In the settings, you can set it up so it starts when Windows boots and runs in the background.
