Hi,

I want to buy a new GPU. Either the 280x or 290, I'm waiting on my paycheck and I'll see which one after that. Is this a good idea or should I wait for new nvidia or amd gpus?

Thanks!

The R9 290 is still a great option for a GPU,even though the GTX 800 series are coming out in like a month or so.

Either of those gpus will last a while especially if you go crossfireX in a few years.

What are your specs? If you have a 1080P monitor just go with a r9 280X but if any higher res like 1440P then go with a r9 290.

R9 280X = comfortable on ultra
R9 290 = piece of cake on ultra

With 280X, expect ~50 FPS and on 290, 60+ FPS, on ultra for latest titles, all on FHD.

800 series may bring surprises, but is speculated to be the same price range as when 700 series launched. I'd rather get a R9 290 and enjoy Ultra for 4 years straight (I already have one lol).

I bought an MSI 290 2 weeks ago and planning on returning it. When gaming, it goes all the way 89 degrees. Idles at 50 degrees. Always getting black screens after around 10 minutes of gaming. I've tried numerous driver versions (and betas) and still no go. I tried and lowering the clock speeds (some say it might work) but not for me.

Came from a GTX 760 and that card was amazing.
