New cpu, no boot (system beeps)

Hello,

I installed a new CPU (socket 775, so nothing new and shiny)
The was no keyboard connected and I switched on the machine. It booted and took me to a screen telling me to press (key) to enter setup to configure the new CPU. I switched off the machine, plugged in the keyboard and when I switched it on, nothing.

It powers up, all fans spin but no video response or system beeps. I tried removing the RAM and seeing if I get any system beeps, but nothing

But, if I take clear the CMOS (by removing battery and switching the jumpers over, then when I do power it up, I get 1 short beep... a few seconds pause, then 3 short beeps.

If I attempt to start the PC again after this, I'm, back to having no beeps, nothing. I have to clear CMOS to get the beeps listed.

Any idea what's happened? What would you recommend me do, to debug further and rule out certain components?

Kind regards

Hi, thank you for the quick response.
Motherboard is Asus P5W DH
CPU is Q9550.

CPU is supported, although historical discussion would suggest people did have problems back in 2008, but I have seen the CPU listed on the supported list.
Nothing has been updated, I simply removed the old CPU and replaced it with the new one.

How can I check this? It wont boot.
My next guess is replace the CPU with the original one to see what happens, but with the steps that I've taken and listed here, along with the system beeps, I thought maybe there would be possible suggestions to diagnose what the problem is.

Remember I got to the black screen telling me that the CPU was not configured, and to press X to configure.
So it did work at one point. I only performed a hard reset (held power button to turn off) and that's it, now it wont POST

OK, so old CPU back in and now the system starts up, 1 system beep, and then stays on motherboard splash screen (X for bios, X for POST)
Seemingly no keyboard connectivity (no num lock/caps lock light)

Even cleared the CMOS.

OK, after checking it over, I finally get it working (I have 2 pairs of RAM, 2x1gb, 2x2gb) I know this setup isn't ideal, but it's an old system, and hasn't caused me problems in the past.

Anyway, upon searching for the BIOS update, I notice on the ASUS website, when going through the options to get the file, the list of OS doesn't include Windows 7. It has all other OS apart from Win7/8 (I am running Win7 64bit)
Could I just select Vista 64bit as my OS or am I asking for trouble?

Also, if I put my original motherboard CD in, it tells me wrong version of OS and many other errors (can't load x.dll ect)
So basically, if I get the Vista version of the updated BIOS on my Win7 system, would this work?

I've never had to update a BIOS before

OK, BIOS flashed and will attempt to reinstall the new CPU at a later date.
I'll be back if I encounter any problems that beat me.

Thanks for your time C12Friedman
