I accidentally purchased the wrong ram and I'm wondering if the ram I bought will work.
I meant to buy the G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory for my i3-4330 cpu which I know is compatible but instead bought the G.Skill Trident X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2400 Memory. From what I understand the i3-4330 supports DDR3-1333/1600 but will it support the DDR3-2400?

Thanks.

The question is, will your motherboard support it?

^ This, and also which socket is your i3? 1156 won't support it, officially, but unofficially it will - the 1155 socket i3 will support it, officially.

I haven't purchased the motherboard yet but the one I want to buy is the ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150.

The motherboard wont support it. Try Asus or msi. Better mobos for a similar price, supporting much more.

I believe, as a worst case scenario, the mobo will reduce the speed of the RAM to what is compatible across it and the CPU.

But he should buy a better mobo, which support more so he can use the RAM's speed if he bought it, otherwise its a waste of money and your ram, right?

So if i understand correctly, I need a motherboard that supports DDR3-2400 ram and the i3-4330 will function safely with the DDR3-2400 + compatible mobo combo?

Yep. You might have a hard time searching for the compatible mobo, but you'll get it. You should get Asus or MSI. The prices are minimum compared to the features.

The mobo and the CPU have to support the RAM speed. According to Intel's official spec sheet here: http://ark.intel.com/products/77769/Intel-Core-i3-4330-... - Your CPU won't support that speed.

I think, simply, return the RAM and get DDR3-1600, otherwise you're taking a big risk having to upgrade your CPU to support the DDR3-2400.

I'm just concerned that I'll potentially damage my cpu using ram that is not officially supported and from my understanding DDR3-2400 is for a overclock setup. If it's safe to use DDR3-2400 then I don't mind paying a little extra for a supported motherboard but if it's not safe then a ram exchange is my only option.

Overclocking is overrated anyways; I agree, just exchanged your RAM :-)

Seriously doubt the CPU can run the sticks, 2400 takes a very strong CPU and generally one that is OCed a little
