Hi i recently built a server out of old hardware i had laying around, it just for minecraft so yea.

I have
Intel Pentium D on it (socket 775)
3gb ram (low clock)
40gb of hdd
running ubuntu

It needs upgrades, but i'm wondering what to buy first, money is short but my first thought is to buy a hdd

Solution

Get the HDD first and get a SSD as they are cheapish and fasttttt.

Any DDR3 RAM will work unless you get a Xeon. I'd suggest an i5-4570 and a cheap z87 or z97 board.

If you want an HDD I recommend an SSD. Get a 120GB Samsung or Toshiba SSD and you'll be set there.
If you can afford a new CPU I'd suggest a Q9650(~$150 on eBay). If you can afford it get a GPU(750 or 750ti) too.

It's a server, he's not gaming. A gpu is useless. You can easily just check ram, cpu usage, how full the hdd is and determine what you should upgrade. But it's just so old, I wouldn't buy anything you couldn't reuse. A q9650 for $150 is a waste especially since you can just get a whole tower with an i5 2xxx for $200.

As far as I knew when gaming off of a local server the server controlled fps. But I dont mess with online gaming whatsoever due to my complete shit internet.

the disk will get full soon, i'll probably need a hdd, the cpu and ram, i guess i can test them and see what i can expect. I'll end up buying everything new, so i should get a hdd first, any thought on what cpu,mb, and ram i should get?

250gb Samsung 840 EVO = ~$120-$140.
Then upgrade your CPU, RAM, and mobo all at once when you need it.

Why not an SSD? Either way why only a terabyte?

Get a 1TB Western Digital Blue if you want an everyday drive.

I am in highschool. I have no job and never have had one. My parents have bought none of my computer(and I dont come from the family type that gives money away freely), I have built it and paid all for it myself. Money shouldnt be spent unless spent correctly. I saved for years(~3) for my first computer. This is now my third and best. It was very expensive but I managed(having no job) so I believe you can wait and save so you can get more performance.

Just my opinion.
