Check the device manager, does it show a driver issue for your sound device? What does the speaker icon in your system tray show? Is there a hard switch on the laptop that got turned off?

The speaker icon on the bottom right has a red X by it but when i hit the key to turn volume up nothing happens. When i hover mouse over it, it says no headphones or speakers are plugged in. Also when i started it up troubleshooting started it up and scanned but as always didn't fix anything.

On Device manager under Sound, Video, and game controllers it says: AMD High Definition Audio device
Cyberlink WebCam Virtual Driver
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
I went into each of those 3 and it says they are working properly. Also clicked the driver tab and then update. It searched but for all it says: The best driver software for your device is already installed. Windows has determined the driver software for your device it up to date.

On Control Panel>sound, it says: Speakers IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Default Device, and it has a green check besides it.

That all sounds ok. If you Right-Click "Speakers" in the Control Panel and click "Test" what happens?

You originally wanted a driver, at what point did your sound stop working?

When I right click and click test nothing happens. the menu that pops up when i right click just goes away. No test or anything. Well my Hard drive went bad so i took it to a computer shop here in town to get it fixed. Now nothing has audio like videos on youtube. Everything pointed and said that i needed the audio driver. Also when i try to open applications such as MS word or windows media player it doesn't open, or it kind of opens and then says not responding.

It didn't start up so they diagnosed it was the hard drive so I left it to get it replaced. That was all they were supposed to do. But i don't know if they did something else:\. Everyone says i need the sound driver but that apparently wasn't the problem. Also speakers are on the far sides and the hard drive is right on the middle so i don't see how it could of have been in the way but again i'm no expert on computers.

It depends if there is a seperate compartment to remove the hard drive or if the keyboard etc. has to be removed, if that's the case the speaker may have been disconnected by accident. Do you have external speakers/headphones you can try? That will tell you whether it's truly a driver issue or a hardware issue i.e. the speakers being disconnected.

Yes, yes i do. Plugged in my headphones and they do not work. Headphones are good because they work on my phone, but not computer.

You could try and remove the devices (uninstall) from the device manager then re-install the driver from the link I gave you. I'm more inclined to think it's a hardware issue though i.e., the speakers being disconnected.

In Device Manager, one is AMD High Definition Audio Device and one is IDT High Definition Audio Codec. Think it will work since the drivers are from HP?
