Is the R9 270x an OC'ed rebrand of the 270?

I'm still looking for a new GPU after my last one died. I was looking at the R9 270x, but I stumbled across forum posts about the R9 270x basically being an OC'ed R9 270 that was rebranded. Is that true? I'd much rather buy a 270 and OC it than buy a 270x for $40 more. Benchmarks show an OC'ed 270 to 1.1GHz beats a stock 270x.

mmm... well the answers you've got so far are pretty good though i'll clarify

The r9-270x is a REBRAND of the HF 7870 Ghz edition with a bit of an overclock tacked onto the memory speed as well. the r9-270 was released AFTER the 270x, it's an identical gpu, and has the exact same memory clock as the 270x, however it's clocked a little slower and has just 1 6 pin power adapter meaning it draws a...

The 270x has a slightly higher pixel and texture rate than the 270, but I'm assuming that's because of the higher clock speed, correct?

Edit: The 270x has more potential because the 270 has to be OC'ed to match it's stock performance. But if I OC the 270x, will it yield more performance for the extra $40?

Though thanks to the memory overclock it still out performs the original HD 7870.

Hmm that's interesting... Why would AMD do that? If people can buy the same GPU for $40 less, there is no reason to buy the 270x? Although I do remember AMD doing something like this before... IIRC they shipped out a few hundred R9 290x cards with a R9 290 BIOS to get rid of extra parts or something. Someone found out and they developed a custom BIOS which unlocks the R9 290x chip. People with these "special" cards could unlock their R9 290 into a R9 290x.

the 270 is just an "energy efficient" version of the 270x... that's it's only purpose.
