I relocated my PC out of sight. Its current location is roughly 20 feet from where I sit. My goal is to run a usb cable the required distance then connect a USB 3.0 hub to allow me to connect my keyboard, mouse, and headset.... and from time to time a usb hd or flash drive.

So I have tried connecting 2 passive usb 3.0 cables. Up to 10ft it operates at an acceptable level but after that it stops dropping.

So here are my ideas so far...
10ft usb 3.0 then a powered 3.0 hub then another 10ft usb 3.0 cable then another powered hub.

Find a 20ft usb active extender them attach the powered usb hub to the end of it.

The first idea seems like it would for sure work but I thought I would ask for some personal experiences before I just started dumping money into a project. So any other ideas or personal experiences would be appreciated.

Monoprice makes an active extension cable that is 15 feet long and can have a normal cable plugged into it as well. They are about $20. I have used one for a 25 foot run (15 foot active / 10 foot device cable) just fine. You can get them from Amazon at:

http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-15-Feet-Female-Active-E...

or direct from Monoprice at:

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&c...

I think that these are the best option, as they are powered by the USB bus directly, and don't need a separate power cord.

Other manufacturers make them, of course, just search for "usb 3.0 active extension cable".

Have you tried adding a hub to the end? I saw that option but wasnt sure if it would still work with the added devices. Common sense says yes but sometimes we get a surprise.

A powered hub will work fine. I am not certain if you use a passive hub how well it will work (the active extension draws a noticeable amount of power).

I planned to use a powered hub and after two minds have come together reaching the same conclusion I will order the parts. Thank you.
