HI, I recently got a old server/pc for $20 so I could fix it up and use it as a gaming pc or a minecraft server. I was wondering, what hardware would I need to have about 50 - 80 players with no lag? I need a motherboard, processor, and ram.

Solution
If you internet checks out, for an MC server, I would assume it likes more cores over single threaded performance. So for a lower price an AMD 8 core build will run a server flawlessly. Also for MC, more RAM is better since having more players means that more chunks are being loaded into the RAM. You might be able to get by with an AMD 6300 and 8gb RAM if you're looking to save money over performance. But ultimately, the player's experience on your server will be mostly affected by your internet speed.

Well do you even have the bandwidth for a server with 50-80 players with no lag.

I don't know what bandwidth is. It has to do with your inernet speed right?

When it comes to upload and download speed, is a higher number better?

Also remember you will need a decent PSU to run this CPU and depending on the case enclosure, you can remove the aftermarket CPU cooler and just use the stock one. But the stock one gets noisy.
