Hello!

I have a WD 500GB (WDC WD5000AAKS-00YGA0) hard drive of 7 years, coming strongly on 8 years now. Never had a problem with it.

But yesterday, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it disappears from My Computer, Device Manager, Disk Management and BIOS.

Only thing recognizing it was HD Sentinel. And it said the disk is Offline.
I did get a weak sector about a month ago and together with age, that is probably not a good sign?

Here are some HD Sentinel screenshots:

There were no major changes on sofware or hardware side of things before this happened. Like I said, out of the blue.

Tried updating mobo's drivers, no change. Then I completely disconnected the disk and reconnected it into another SATA port on motherboard. It worked for a few hours until it disappeared again.

Is there anything that can be done at this stage? Or is this final goodbye?

Solution
Try and grab the data you need off it, before it dies completely.
You'll need a new drive, perhaps a WD Caviar Blue, or an SSD if you can afford one. :)

Doesn't recognize it, while it's "offline". Will have to reconnect the SATA cables again to hopefully recognize it.

Well, the reconnecting of SATA cables helps but like I said only for a few hours. It was enough so I could backup vital files and the rest that are not important I will leave on it until my new WD Blue 1TB arrives and will try to move the rest to the new disk. :)

Thanks everybody! It's just not worth hoping that it will still work. But what I wonder is how every program said the disk is FINE. I did get that weak sector from HD Sentinel but the program also said it's perfectly fine to continue using it. Guess you can't even fully trust these programs.
